Accommodation

The main hotels in the Sardinero area are about 15 minutes (walking) from the venue of the conference, and 5 minutes by bus. The centre of the town is about 20 minutes by bus from both places, hotels and conference venue. The beach is near these hotels.

Getting to Santander

By air

Santander Airport, located about five kilometres from the Town Hall, has flights connecting Santander with:

  • Domestic destinations: Barcelona, Madrid, Gran Canaria, Sevilla, Valencia, Málaga, Alicante, Palma de Mallorca (Iberia Airlines).

  • International destinations: London-Standsted, Rome-Ciampino, Frankfurt-Hahn, Liverpool (Ryanair), Paris-Orly, Amsterdam-Schiphol (Iberia Airlines).

There are frequent buses (roughly, once every 30 minutes) from the airport to the centre of town. Alternatively, you may take a taxi, at a price of around 15 euros.

Another possibility is to fly to  Bilbao Airport, located about 100 kilometres from Santander. Getting from Bilbao to Santander can be done by: TAXI (it costs more than 100 euros), FEVE trains from Bilbao to Santander or a bus. There are three trains per day and there are numerous, very affordable buses to Santander from  Bilbao's Garellano Bus Station Termibus and journey time is roughly 90 minutes. There are buses connecting the airport to the Bus Station every 20 minutes. Alternatively, you may take a taxi from the airport to either the Railway Station or the Bus Station at a price of around 20 euros.

By sea

 There are two sailings a week between Plymouth (UK) and Santander, each is a 24-hour cruise operated by Brittany Ferries.

By train

 Several daily connections from Madrid, operated by RENFE and trains from Bilbao and Oviedo,

 operated by FEVE.

By bus

 All buses arrive at the Estación de Autobuses.

International buses, e.g. from Brussels, London, Paris, Zürich and Prague) are operated by ALSA, phone + 34 902 42 22 42 or + 34 942 22 16 85.

By car

If you drive your own car or a rented car, you can arrive at Santander

  • South (from Madrid): Free highway Madrid-Burgos to connect Burgos-Santander or free highway Madrid-Palencia to connect free highway Palencia-Santander (under construction). It takes around five hours.

  • South (alternative): If you dislike mountain roads follow free highway Madrid-Burgos, then the toll highway Burgos-Bilbao and, finally, the free highway Bilbao-Santander. This route takes about 100 km. more than the main route above.

  • From France (East): Toll highway from the French border till Bilbao, free highway from Bilbao to Santander). About 60 minutes Bilbao-Santander, three hours Santander-French border.

  • From the West (Galicia, Asturias and Portugal): Free highway from Asturias and Galicia to Santander.

Moving around

 The town has a network of buses: check out the municipal website for routes and timetable. The taxi service is also good. Standard fares between any two points in town are around 8 euros.
